"Art and Identity"

Taking time to explore, digest and appreciate the art from The Museum of Modern Arts was a pretty neat experience for me. This was my first time walking into the building and right away my eye was caught looking at some unique work of arts. There was so much paintings, photographs, sculptures and even installations. It was definitely a challenge trying to search for artwork and trying to compare it with its identity, culture, and historical time and place.

The first piece of art that caught my eye was Felix Gonzalez Torres's Paper structure. There was nothing fancy about it to be honest. It was simply paper shaped into very sharp looking cone spikes. Some spikes would be long some of medium sized and a couple of tiny spikes. Immediately I couldn't help but make a video game joke and comparison to Mortal Kombat because of the pointy features, but I digress. I've decided to compare this artwork with Felix Gonzalez Torres's identity because one reason he was inspired to create this was due to the AIDS outbreak epidemic that took the art community by storm as it did the rest of the world. It's unfortunate that he ended up passing away because of the disease, so what i get from the paper structure is image and message on how dangerous it comes across. Just how AIDS still dangerously run a muck in today's time.

The second work of art I've chosen was "Bleeding Takari II" by El Anatsui. It's most definitely among the oddest pieces of art I have come across while in the museum. It was made with aluminum and copper wire which is pretty impressive. While intelligently incorporating liquor bottle caps and seals thrown away by Nigerian distilleries. El Anatsui created this piece because of the consumer habits and historical times of colonialism in not only in his home residence but his nation of Nigeria. I instantly started to see why he made the visual of the "Bleeding Takari II" look like it was bleeding. He was comparing his art work to the tough times of Nigeria.

Lastly, the final creation of art that I picked was Constantin Brancusi's "Mile Pagony". The bronze version of the sculpture really had me intrigued, that I wanted to search its cultural background. The purpose of the sculpture was to seek or get the message across that not only the impression of truth that a figure is a part of its environment, but its atmosphere and environment flows through the figure and vice versa. This was an old philosophy in Greek culture, although trying to convey the message through stone, wood, bronze is new. While Greek philosophers thought there was no point to this, it doesn't stop the artist from at least attempting.

While there was a ton of artwork i could have chosen to get these points across, it's those three that reached out to me the most from the short amount of time at The Museum of Modern Arts. You get to see how the artist can tell a story through his creations. Whether it's about his personal identity, cultural background or even the historical time of a nation. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and looking forward to the next trip to savor more works of art.

Narrative Digital Collage

                                                              Digital Collage

This collage expresses many things about myself and my life in general. The location shown is the neighborhood I'm currently living at called Williamsburg in Brooklyn. You'll see both a baseball and a basketball on the lower left corner. Growing up it was both those sports i grew up learning playing and of course watching. I grew up a New York Yankees fan. As for basketball i have a total of five teams that I support. I support both the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets so i'm not a die hard fan for just one team. The other three are the Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trailblazers and Sacramento Kings. I posted a picture of a husky next to the mailbox and hydrant. This is because I simply love dogs and while I currently own a Yorkshire, one day i hope to acquire a husky! The car you see blocking the road is a Lamborghini Aventador with a Tron theme to it. This is my dream car that i always wanted and will never get in a thousand lifetimes! On the bottom right there's a character on the left known as Rock Lee and Orochimaru to the right of him from an anime named "Naruto". Rock Lee represents my best friend Adrian who i grew up with in this neighborhood my whole life and he loves this character. I like to refer to myself to Orochimaru because hes my favorite character and on a good day can resemble some attributes of him when my hairs loose. If you look to the right of the basketball there's a game character named "Talon" from the game "League of Legends" and the top right theres a spacecraft known as "Arwing" from a game called "Starfox 64". I love playing video games but these days I've strayed more toward online gaming like role playing games, and massive multiplayer online games. If you look closely in the sky toward the left hand corner you will see not a moon but the planet Neptune. As a kid growing up I also had a keen interest for astronomy and the planet Neptune was my favorite out of all of them.

Good Art Bad Art

Good Art Bad Art

What I consider good art is something that can reach out and touch someones heart. Not only that, but so people can relate to it. There's many things that can be considered good art just because of individual meaning and taste. After all this is subjective. I feel a person can portray good art as something well drawn or painted. Perhaps something unique in which no ones ever seen before. Even art pieces like sculptures. I truly believe that sculptures can be a powerful and good piece of art. For example religious figures, historic figures and so forth.

Now let's talk about bad art. What is bad art? Well in my view this is a tough question to answer due to how subjective this topic is, as mentioned earlier. What i may view as bad art is something disrespectful towards someone else's beliefs, nation and so on. On top of that I'm guilty and a firm believer that if somethings not properly drawn, painted or sculpted well. Make no mistake i'm no artist myself but you know the old saying " everyone is a critic." I digress a little. Now you may have just read my take on bad art, that does not necessarily mean everyone else would say the same. For instance some would disagree with my opinions and consider everything i call bad art good! If you take a look i'm going to display two pieces of art. One I call good and one I deem as bad.

"good" its simple yet the light blue and image of her singing catches me.

"bad"   When i see things like this and gets called art, i cringe. After all its just rusted garbage stacked on top of each other.
